For the majority of the photos I take at gigs I use a straight up, basic compact camera with no more than 12mp, from the crowd. I honestly believe it’s more about timing than quality of the camera, but obviously this shows in most shots as they’re not as smooth as they could be. Saying that whenever a photo pass is available/I’m shooting a friend’s band then I use a Canon 500D and not much else. Again, I think timing and angles are more important than fancy equipment. Even heroes like Paul Harries started using very basic cameras, and there are photos still in use today he’s taken with rudimentary stuff (a lot of early Emilie Autumn etc). I’ve used things like the 5D mk II with expensive lenses and recording equipment but I find the 500D suits me and my small hands fine, it’s finding what suits you. Even SLR and disposable cameras can take amazing photos if you catch it right.
All of the photos on here at the moment were taken on a 10mp or 12mp compact camera (aside from Gaz Hunter, which was taken with my Canon).
Tonight i’ll be posting some photos from Panic! at the Disco’s Brixton show last night, but as a warning the quality may be a bit iffy because I was using a friend’s camera at last minute and wasn’t used to it, at all. Most of them will go on Harmony-punks, so check that out for more. Apart from that, enjoy.
